Archival Research Fees
There is a $5.00 annual user fee for the archives. Upon payment, you will receive an archival card which provides a year's access. The fee is waived for members of the Courtenay and District Historical Society.

There may be additional charges when a large amount of staff time is required. For example, a request to photocopy many pages from old newspapers might take hours of staff time. In this instance there would be fees for the copies, as well as, a charge of $15.00 per hour of staff time.

Charging for time worked is at the discretion of the staff and will be discussed with the researcher BEFORE work begins. The first hour of our time is a $5.00 charge; every hour after or part thereof is $15.00. We will keep a record of our time and reference material used. A deposit may be required in advance ( normally $25.00 ).

Photocopies

Please note that when using your own paper the charge is based on the number of times the paper is fed through the machine. For example, a double sided 8.5 x 11 page would cost $0.20.

Photographic Reprints

• Negatives: If the archives does not have a negative of a photo requested from which to produce a print, an additional fee will be charged for the copy negative. The negative becomes the property of the Courtenay and District Museum and Archives.

• Archive Fee: There is a 20% archival fee on copy work total.

• Personal Use: In purchasing a print, the researcher obtains permission for personal use only. Permission is not granted for further reproduction or for use other than that specified in the original request for reproduction.

• Publication: The Courtenay and District Museum and Archives does not charge an extra permission fee for photographs reproduced in books, magazines, or newspapers.

  We do request that the museum be credited, and that the photograph number be cited as follows: "Courtesy of the Courtenay and District Museum and Archives '999.99.9'". A publication requests must receive approval of the curator.

  The Courtenay and District Museum and Archives request a copy of the publication in which the image appears.

• Commercial Use: Any proposal that involves reproduction of a photograph for commercial purposes, other than for books, magazines, or newspapers, must be submitted in memorandum form to the Curator for approval. Approved restrictions and additional fees for use will be discussed.

Photographic Rates

The following are sample rates for photographic reprints, taxes not included. Tese rates assume black and white reproductions. For sepia tone, add 50% to the print price.
