    Flower Power

It's been a stellar year for flowers at the museum - the amazing show of zinnias in our front bed definitely justifies a shout out to the wonderful work done by the City of Courtenay Parks Department. Thank you!

It's All There in Black and White

Love him or hate him, there's no denying it was a big day when Canada's 18th Prime Minister visited the town of Comox. Check out details of the "social call" in this August 3, 1988 edition of the Comox District Free Press.

    Watershed Moments

Here is the latest newsletter installment of an image and quote from the museum's award-winning book Watershed Moments - A Pictorial History of Courtenay and District.

Photo credit: Courtenay's 5th Street lined with cars. CDM 989.69.34 Page 151

Photo caption: "...due to an economic boom in the mid- to late 1920s, automobile sales increased, which meant there were more drivers on the road. Businesses developed to service four-wheeled travellers and holiday makers. By the late 1940s, Courtenay directories listed five auto courts (or auto camps), which clustered around the main routes. In Courtenay, that meant along Cliffe Avenue and near the 5th Street Bridge." Page 151.

    RBCM Exhibit on Family

If you're heading to our provincial capital, don't forget to take in the new exhibit at the Royal British Columbia Museum "Family: Bonds and Belonging, It's NOT All Relative" on display until October 31st.

The exhibit was created in-house by RBCM staff and displays some seldom seen artifacts.

    Museum Funding

The Courtenay and District Historical Society was registered as a nonprofit society in 1961 to preserve and interpret cultural and natural heritage of the Comox Valley. It has functioned as an independent society since that time. Funds are derived from the generous support of the City of Courtenay, British Columbia Arts Council, Comox Valley Regional District, British Columbia Gaming Branch, and from museum generated revenues and donations.

Proud sponsors of the Courtenay & District Museum:

    The City of Courtenay

    BC Arts Councils
