October 29th - November 1st
The Free Spirit Conservation Tour will be at the Courtenay Museum October 29th through November 1st. This travelling exhibit celebrates the last 150 years of BC's history through displays, interactive stations and a theatre program featuring actors who use songs and stories to entertain and inform.
The exhibit is a free, fun and educational activity for families presented by the Royal BC Museum, BC Hydro and the Courtenay and District Museum. The exhibit is available to the public from 10 am to 5 pm. Please be advised that visitors will be sharing the exhibit space with school classes on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Or maybe you could jot down a few words about a special Comox Valley memory. Pictures of things that are important, but too large to fit into the box could also be included.
The box will be on exhibit during the Free Spirit Conservation Tour.

A free guided heritage walk of the downtown Courtenay area will be led by Ron Bannerman on Saturday, November 1st courtesy of the Free Spirit Tour. Bannerman is a well-known valley historian whose enthusiasm, knowledge and easy going manner make him the perfect man for the job. The tour will start at the museum at 10:30 am and last approximately 2 hours. The walk is a “go”, rain or shine, so be sure to dress for our changeable weather. Pre-registration is required as space is limited. Reserve your place by calling 250-334-0686.

Threats to Biodiversity in BC
Speaker: Dr. Gavin Hanke

Admission: Free! First come, first served basis.
At 1:00 pm on Saturday, November 1st, Dr. Gavin Hanke will speak on "Threats to Biodiversity in BC and the Introduction of Exotic Species". The term "exotic" refers to non-native organisms that can create serious habitat alteration for native species. When asked for examples, Hanke included "starlings, house sparrows, carp, goldfish, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, grey squirrel, bison, camels, cattle, sheep, feral cats... the list goes on".
Dr. Hanke is a curator of Vertebrate Zoology at the Royal BC Museum. He studies the systematics of fishes, both living and extinct, and is interested in fish, amphibian and reptile biogeography as well exotic species introductions.
The lecture is free and attendance will be on a first come, first served basis.
