-Portrait-

The Desmostylidae represents the only family of the order Desmostylia, of which Cornwallius may or may not have been a typical member. The desmostylids, especially those better known from the Miocene of Japan, the Pacific Northwest, and possibly Florida, were amphibious in nature, poling themselves through the shallows in the same manner as a hippopotamus “walks” over a riverbed, and prising the occasional clam or oyster from the rocks with its front tusks.
