-Portrait-

The Odontaspidae (Sand Tiger Sharks) includes members of rather large size with a moderately-sized snouts and jaws that can be thrust slightly forward to engage prey. The teeth are generally of the tearing variety, but will tend toward the cutting type in some lineages, by a distinct widening of the central cusp and by the introduction of serrations along part of the length of the cutting edge. In addition, while most genera usually inhabit warm, shallow waters today, a few are known to also inhabit deeper water. Odontaspis is known from Maastrichtian marine deposits on the north coast of Hornby Island.
