Spring Break Programmes
Museum programmers have planned an exciting week of activities for spring break. A variety of different classes are offered Tuesday, March 22nd to Friday, March 25th for children aged 5 to 12 years old. Cost for each class is $17 plus HST. Advance registration is required.
March 22:
Seashore Life 10am to 12pm or 2pm to 4pm
This is an exciting, hands-on programme focusing on the seashore life of Vancouver Island! Participants will learn all about the fascinating creatures that inhabit the local shorelines. Students will have the opportunity to study the body structure, movement and feeding habits of a variety of shore-dwelling creatures including: crabs, barnacles, chitons, nudibranchs, sea stars and much more! Children will learn how to identify a variety of local seashore creatures as well as some of those to avoid on a beachcombing adventure of their own.
March 23:
Earth Science 10am to 12pm
Through interactive demonstrations, hands-on activities and discussions, participants will learn all about the fascinating study of Earth Sciences. Children will have the opportunity to build an erupting volcano, study rocks and fossils and create an "earthquake" using foam models of tectonic plates.
Wacky Science 2pm to 4pm
This fun and educational programme is packed with experiments and crafts! Magic mud, polymer putty, cabbage juice indicator and erupting volcanoes are just a few of the exciting activities that make up this class! Children will also take part in group activities, games and discussions.
March 24:
Fabulous Fossils 10am to 12pm or 2pm to 4pm
This hands-on programme introduces children to the exciting world of paleontology! Learn how fossils are formed, make a mould and cast of a fossil to take home, tour the museum's paleontology exhibits and learn how to identify local fossils.
March 25:
Dinosaur Day 10am to 12pm or 2pm to 4pm
Children will have the opportunity to find out what it is like for real paleontologists studying dinosaurs in a museum setting. Participants will learn all about the different types of dinosaurs and the time periods in which they lived. Activities include building a dinosaur model to take home and taking part in a mock dinosaur excavation.
