SUMMARY:Exhibit – Hope Meets Action: Echoes Through the Black Continuum
DESCRIPTION:Hope Meets Action: Echoes Through the Black Continuum\, a travelling exhibit created by the BC Black History Awareness Society in partnership with the Royal BC Museum\, will be on display in our second-floor gallery starting March 7\, 2026. \nThe exhibit reclaims and retells the complicated history of Black British Columbians\, and traces an unbroken line of strength and resistance from the distant past to the present and into the future by highlighting the contributions of Black leaders whose actions echo across the centuries. \nHope Meets Action initially debuted in Clifford Carl Hall at the Royal BC Museum in 2021\, and was met with an overwhelmingly positive public response. “We are pleased to continue to make this exhibit available publicly\, said BCBHAS President\, Silvia Mangue Alene. “This exhibit shares and promotes understanding of the history of Black settlers and their legacy\, a legacy that contemporary Blacks in BC are very proud of.” \nContinue Reading

SUMMARY:Exhibit: Button Blankets
DESCRIPTION:Pamela Mitchell\, artist and K’ómoks First Nation Culture Manager\, will display pieces of her work in the museum’s Rotary Gallery. \nThe exhibit will feature button blankets. The blankets are important pieces of Indigenous Pacific Northwest Coast regalia with crests that depict a symbol of the wearer’s family heritage. \nMitchell is a member of the K’ómoks First Nation (KFN) and has Kwakwaka’wakw and Coast Salish roots. \nHer artwork can be seen around the valley including the NIC Courtenay campus\, on a Comox Fire Department truck\, and at her family-owned Cedar Bark Gallery on Bayside Road. Or you may know her from this spring’s sold-out Sid Williams Theatre presentation of “The Story of the K’ómoks – Cultural Topography of Traditional Indigenous Land Use at Pentlatch”.

SUMMARY:Event: Button Drive
DESCRIPTION:One of Pamela Mitchell’s many projects as Culture Manager is working to create a “treasure box” of ceremonial regalia items to share with KFN members who are without. Buttons are always needed to craft new blankets\, and the public are invited to help by donating. Buttons must be white in colour but can be made from plastic or shell. Flat sew-through buttons are preferred. A drop box will be at the museum from October 22 to October 30 for those who wish to contribute.

SUMMARY:Lecture: North Island Heritage Sites
DESCRIPTION:Plan your next “staycation” with historian Jeanette Taylor as she presents an illustrated talk about north Vancouver Island’s heritage sites. She brings a wealth of experience to her subject\, from writing local history to guided boat tours and her former role as a curator with the Museum at Campbell River. \nTaylor will highlight accessible gems and provide a downloadable site list. Many can be reached by car and trail\, while others\, like Mitlenatch Island or Nootka Sound\, require boat tours. \nA road trip to Port Hardy should include Suquash Mine\, says Taylor\, to see century-old coal mining equipment and surface digging on a sandstone beach\, which dates back to the 1850s. \nClick for More Details

SUMMARY:Lecture: Wild Bears of Canada
DESCRIPTION:Wild Bears of Canada explores the lives of Canada’s grizzlies\, black bears and polar bears through field photography and the nuanced observations of a career nature guide. \nEdward Savage has spent fifteen years watching bears across some of the country’s most remote terrain— and for many of the bears in this book\, that relationship spans over a decade. Some he first encountered as six-month-old cubs; they are now adults with cubs of their own. That depth of observation is evident on every page of his book: how grizzly mothers raise and wean their young\, what dangers imperil black bears\, and how polar bears locate each other across the sea ice. \nSavage ponders the contradictory relationship humans have with bears: Why do we consider these animals dangerous and aggressive in the wilderness\, yet welcome these furry symbols as snuggly toys and protagonists of movies? \nMore Details
