    Exploring a Forgotten Coastline

    Guest speaker: Jeanette Taylor
When: 7 pm, Tuesday, February 7th
Where: Rotary Gallery, Courtenay and District Museum
Admission: $5 (plus HST) members; $6 (plus HST) general public. Advance tickets recommended.

Come and explore a little known part of the BC coast with historian Jeanette Taylor.

Taylor's illustrated presentation, based upon her books and tours aboard the historic Columbia III, will provide a rare view of the islands and inlets of the inner coast between North Vancouver Island and the mainland.

Her slides include both contemporary and archival images of places like Kingcome Inlet and Bute Inlet, the Discovery Islands off Campbell River and the Broughton Islands off Port McNeill.

    New Year Resolutions

The following article appeared in the Comox District Free Press of January 2, 1936:

    "Resolutions

Cynics will smile pityingly and claim that most of the resolutions made to mark the advent of the New Year are either broken or forgotten before New Year's Day has passed. They claim - and probably they are right – we'll be jogging along quite contentedly in the same old way.

Nevertheless, the making and subsequent breaking of good intentions is by no means the important feature which characterizes this urge we feel for a fresh start.

The true value lies in the fact we acknowledge the need for a change, in the realization we are not as perfect as we might be. And if only once a year we indulge in a short period of introspection, the result is definitely for good.

The man really to be pitied is he who sees no use in formulating good intentions."

    Science and Nature Discovery Programme

Students have returned this month to enjoy the unbeatable combination of learning and fun at the museum's popular Science and Nature Discovery Programme, which runs from September to May. Registration is ongoing and new students are welcome at any time. No prerequisites are required.

January 2010 marked the launch of the Science and Nature Discovery Programme. Designed exclusively for home schooled children and largely comprised of hands-on activities, the programme has been a huge success! One class per week was originally offered and interest has been so great that four more classes have been added to accommodate all the students. Two years later all sorts of exciting projects have been created including moveable models of the solar system, erupting volcanoes, cloud identification charts and a month-long study on vertebrates.

Group learning helps students to build confidence in their social and public speaking skills while small class sizes allow the instructor to spend time assisting each student with any specific needs. Weekly two hour classes are geared for children aged five through twelve and are presented at the museum. Students gain a sense of pride by creating projects to express understanding of the course material as well as their individual points of view.

The cost for each 4 class session is $62.50 + HST. For more information on available class times, programme content or to register a student, please contact the museum at (250) 334-0686 or visit our website at www.courtenaymuseum.ca.

It's All There in Black and White

Do you prefer your beer by the bucket or the glass?

The Cumberland Islander of March 13, 1925 ponders the legality of that question.

    Anniversary Give Away

We have reached the end of our Courtenay & District Historical Society 50th anniversary give away contest. Our final winners for the month of December were Jim Halvorson and Facebook fan Kira Gebauer.

It was great fun to be able to give away copies of The Comox Valley book by Paula Wild.

Congratulations again to all who were the lucky recipients.

What Happens When We Turn off the Remote

This charming crocheted purse (c. 1900) beautifully illustrates detail in creating and embellishing an item. The piece belonged to Comox Valley pioneer Jane Grieve (b. 1828 – d. 1918).

George and Jane Grieve (both British emigrants) came to the Comox Valley in 1875 from Harvey Station, New Brunswick. They became successful farmers and were involved in many district undertakings, particularly the building of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church at the top of Mission Hill.

Jane Grieve's obituary describes her as "ever maintaining that fine spirit that has had such a good influence in the community. For years she has been an invalid but has been most cheerful, and uncomplaining...".

    Museum Funding

The Courtenay and District Historical Society was registered as a nonprofit society in 1961 to preserve and interpret cultural and natural heritage of the Comox Valley. It has functioned as an independent society since that time. Funds are derived from the generous support of the City of Courtenay, British Columbia Arts Council, Comox Valley Regional District, British Columbia Gaming Branch, and from museum generated revenues and donations.
