Activities planned for the day include (but aren’t limited to): an engaging kids’ craft, a musical cupcake walk, and door prize draws.

The museum provides an enriching historical exploration of natural and cultural history so if you are in the downtown Courtenay area on Sunday, July 1st, please come and see!

Be enthralled by the elasmosaur, mingle with a mosasaur or pay a visit to our resident African lungfish, Pam. Check out the pioneer and First Nations exhibits and see the new temporary exhibit (article follows) and be sure to take part in the fun activities we have planned for everybody. You never know - you could walk away with a cupcake!

    Upstairs at Wah Lee's:
Portraits from the C.S. Wing Studio

    July 1st to September 29th, 2012

Constable Dave Anderson on left, in front of Wah Lee Store, c. 1910, Quesnel and District Museum and Archives.

The Courtenay and District Museum plays host to the traveling exhibit Upstairs at Wah Lee's this summer.

The exhibition consists of 30 photographs captured by Chinese Canadian photographer Chow Shong Wing circa 1910 in the town of Quesnel, BC.

Chow Shong Wing was the first professional photographer in the town and, if the intimacy of the portraits is any indication, was well acquainted with the First Nations, Chinese and Caucasian people who sat before his lens.

It's All There in Black and White

This year is the Diamond Jubilee marking 60 years of Queen Elizabeth II’s ascension to the throne. What was on the minds of ordinary folks here in the Comox Valley at this time of change? To get a glimpse, read this newspaper article “Talk of the Town” from the June 19, 1952 Comox District Free Press. The article is written by Dick Ayres – a practitioner of the tongue-in-cheek humour style.

    Museum Funding

The Courtenay and District Historical Society was registered as a nonprofit society in 1961 to preserve and interpret cultural and natural heritage of the Comox Valley. It has functioned as an independent society since that time. Funds are derived from the generous support of the City of Courtenay, British Columbia Arts Council, Comox Valley Regional District, British Columbia Gaming Branch, and from museum generated revenues and donations.
