Mary Mobley - Unforgettable
The Courtenay and District Historical Society lost a long-time supporter in March with the passing of Mary Mobley (nee Gladys Mary Dingwall, 1919-2012). Mary inspired us all with her generosity, sense of humour and dedication to her family and community. Mary was part of the Historical Society’s executive from 1980 to 2003. Historian and fellow society executive member Judy Hagen has thoughtfully provided the following reminiscence. Mary Mobley (centre) is pictured in a photo that appeared in the Comox District Free Press of October 18, 1978. The image is credited to Trish Halford and is captioned: "Three smiling Rebekah Lodge members tend the counter at the lodge's bazaar and bake sale Saturday at the Driftwood Mall.." While the idea of writing a complete history can be overwhelming, focusing on one story at a time is easier, more fun and can paint a more colourful picture of who you are. Bring a notebook and come prepared to create a short story inspired by a single event or experience in your life. The workshop is suitable for groups or individuals and is designed for people of all ages to enjoy. As a writer with a lifelong interest in history and genealogy, Elizabeth brings a very personal point of view to enthusiasts in the Comox Valley. Twin Gifts for Capes Escape It is a pleasure to announce that the museum has received a generous gift from Jim and Lorna Greenway of Earl Grey, Saskatchewan. The twin beds upstairs have been upgraded to ensure extra comfort and a little more elbow room for future guests. Mr. and Mrs. Greenway recently spent two months at Capes Escape, and, upon leaving, purchased two new beds for the house. The Greenways even shopped around before museum staff learned of their plan! Before Television
"Before Television" has been a newsletter feature that shares the Courtenay and District Museum collection with readers while at the same time highlighting the ingenuity and creativity of crafts people as they added beauty and personal style to items from their home and work life.

What is it?
The artifact pictured is called a miser’s purse – so named because both hands were required to open the pouches. These purses were used by both men and women in the 1860s to the 1880s.

As the weather warms up many of us start dreaming of our gardens and the joy of having our own greenhouse.
Columnist Ede Anfield touched on those same ideas in "The Women's Angle" article that appeared in the March 16, 1960 edition of the Comox District Free Press.

The Courtenay and District Historical Society was registered as a nonprofit society in 1961 to preserve and interpret cultural and natural heritage of the Comox Valley. It has functioned as an independent society since that time. Funds are derived from the generous support of the City of Courtenay, British Columbia Arts Council, Comox Valley Regional District, British Columbia Gaming Branch, and from museum generated revenues and donations.
