    Boot Camp for Authors

The idea's been with you a long time. You've even written some of it down. But so far, your Great Canadian Classic is just a pile of paper in a drawer or a file on your computer hard drive.

    Success!

The new archives space provides room and light to tackle projects like the one pictured here…accessioning a large number of books donated by Bill and Sandy Heybroek.

And, thanks to the generosity of supporters, our wish for roller shade blinds for the renovated area has been answered.

Our next step in outfitting the building with similar blinds is the Rotary Gallery – is there anyone else out there willing to contribute funds to this goal?

It's All There in Black and White

What do the Aspen and Willow have to do with Easter? Do eggs and butterflies have something in common? What food was eaten at Easter in 1925 that is still a tradition today? Read this article and advertisement from the Friday, April 10th 1925 edition of The Cumberland Islander to find the answers.

Katherine, Geoff and Phyllis Capes on Mt. Arrowsmith, 1931.

    A Very Welcoming Capes Escape

Katherine Capes and her sister Phyllis followed in their father's footsteps by becoming avid hikers, then and now a challenging but, without doubt, exhilarating outdoor activity in the Valley. The Courtenay/Comox (now Comox District) Mountaineering club formed in 1927 and Geoffrey Capes served as director for many years.

Capes Escape would provide a wonderful base for a family or club planning a vacation around a series of day hikes or climbs. Camping is not for everyone so museum staff are getting the word out and hope to welcome those guests who really need a fortifying night's sleep before heading for the hills again.

What Happens When We Turn off the Remote

Oh, the simplicity of a wooden sock stretcher!

No embellishment required – the sock stretcher is pure function.

Known as sock stretchers, blockers, dryers or boards, wooden forms like those shown here were used to dry woolen socks without shrinking. The holes in the wood increased air circulation and lead to faster drying.

Sock stretchers were a very useful device for preserving all those hand knitted socks before the advent of nylon after World War II.

    Museum Funding

The Courtenay and District Historical Society was registered as a nonprofit society in 1961 to preserve and interpret cultural and natural heritage of the Comox Valley. It has functioned as an independent society since that time. Funds are derived from the generous support of the City of Courtenay, British Columbia Arts Council, Comox Valley Regional District, British Columbia Gaming Branch, and from museum generated revenues and donations.
