Earth Sciences Assistant

Summer employment 2019

The Earth Sciences Assistant is suitable for a person interested in: Earth Sciences, Science, Communications and Recreation.

This position entails daily work with the Earth Sciences Curator on fossil field trips, public introduction of natural history collections to all ages, assistance with response to, and safety for, visitors and physical carrying of equipment on field trips to Comox Valley riverbanks and shorelines.

Other related duties could include front desk support, set-up and organizational assistance for meetings and events that promote the museum mandate of increased public awareness of cultural and natural heritage of the Comox Valley.

Physical demands: Must be able to carry 30-40 lb pack, to hike daily in all weather and to have awareness and quick response to public capabilities on trails and walks while outdoors.  This person should have good knowledge of first aid and emergency awareness. First Aid ticket preferred.

Must have own transportation and suitable outdoor clothing.


Corporate Assistant

Summer employment 2019

The Corporate Assistant is a suitable for a person interested in tourism and business.

The person in this position will help with all aspects of visitor services and corporate administration necessary to assist with public response at this popular regional destination.

Responsibilities will include assisting with visitor services, sales, communications and administrative tasks. This position is an excellent opportunity for an individual with a keen interest in nonprofit tourism business.

Skills and experience required for this position include some post-secondary study in the fields of business management, experience with working with the public in a busy atmosphere and excellent communications, technology and organizational abilities.

Other related duties could include assistance with changing exhibitions and receptions, set-up and organizational assistance for meetings and events that promote the museum mandate of increased public awareness of cultural and natural heritage of the Comox Valley.

Physical demands and capabilities: Must be able to read and write cursive fluently. Must be able to move full document boxes, assist with cleaning work surfaces and spaces and assist with general everyday upkeep in office and public spaces. Must be able to climb ladders and reach overhead.


Social History Collections and Research Assistant

Summer employment 2019

The Social History Collections and Research Assistant is a position for a person interested in history, anthropology and/or museum studies.

Backlog accessioning
The successful applicant will receive training and supervision in the numbering and primary care of social history artifacts and photographs.
Tasks:

  • Basic info about donation handwritten into register book and accession number assigned to items.
  • Rudimentary wiping/cleaning/dusting of items as required.
  • Physically mark the assigned accession number on to each object.
  • Enter all management information (includes accession number, source, location and condition), descriptive information (object name, material, size and description) and historical information (use, date or period if known, maker, etc. *note: some research may be required to complete this section) into the museum’s collection database.
  • File hard copy donation forms.
  • Re-house items for storage as required.
  • Tasks will also include some basic upkeep and cleaning of the collections storage area.

Research inquiries

Over the past several summers, students have assisted in tracking down historical information in regards to families, buildings and local businesses.  This usually involves reading archive clipping files, reference books and local newspapers on microfilm, performing online research and composing replies to inquiries.
Other related duties could include front desk support, assistance with changing exhibitions and receptions, set-up and organizational assistance for meetings and events that promote the museum mandate of increased public awareness of cultural and natural heritage of the Comox Valley.

Physical demands and capabilities: Must be able to read and write cursive fluently. The CDM is a three storey building and the person in this position will be required to work on all three work levels and be able to ascend and descend staircases numerous times per day. This is not an optimum environment for people with allergies. Must be able to move full document boxes, assist with cleaning work surfaces and spaces and assist with general everyday upkeep in office, collections and public spaces. Must be able to climb ladders and reach overhead.
