The Courtenay Museum is fortunate to currently have a core group of volunteers that make extraordinary things possible on a daily basis.
The Board of Directors for the Courtenay and District Historical Society is made up of a diverse group of volunteers from the community.
One of our longest standing volunteers is Marjorie Thorpe who has been with the museum since May of 1994. Marjorie works in the Palaeontology section researching, cataloguing and adding to the database.
Peggy Hildebrand works with the social history collection on a long term project to improve artifact descriptions, storage and accessibility.
Jim Peacock is currently working on photographing the social history artifacts. He has also been known to turn his hand to cataloguing and/or turn his camera to capturing images of pretty much anything else we ask.
Christine Dickinson has taken on the task of indexing the Geoffrey Capes diaries. This is no small feat as Capes was a prolific writer creating almost 50 volumes during his years in the Comox Valley. It is hoped the indexing work will be completed during 2011.
Christine and her husband David have also been involved with work on the grounds of the Capes Escape. Whether it is picking fruit or pruning trees, their gardening know-how is much appreciated.
The museum has been ably assisted by workers from the Volunteer Involvement Program for many years. Our current volunteers are Lisa Bruce and Walter Martin who come in once a week to take care of recycling and clean fingerprints off display cases.
The Comox Valley Family History Research Group took on a project of their own that has proved invaluable to archives researchers and genealogists alike. This devoted group searches newspapers for birth, marriage and death listings. They have combed through decades of information and created a user friendly catalogue system.
A heartfelt thank you to all the volunteers who bring their energy and commitment to the Courtenay and District Museum and make this institution and community a better place.
