The Curious Kids Club will continue to explore and investigate the treasures held at the museum. Saturdays from 10 am-12 noon (while the Farmers’ Market is going on at the Native Sons Hall) kids will inspect different aspects of the museum and do some hands-on activities.

The Curious Kids Club will be running on Saturdays in January from 10 am-12 noon. Kids will get a behind the scenes look at the museum and do some hands on activities. Come and join in the fun!

Curious Kids Club

The Courtenay and District Museum is creating a Curious Kids Club on Saturdays for children between the ages of 5 and 12 years.

Starting November 29th children will meet at the Museum from 10:00 am -12:00 noon (a perfect time for mom and dad to scout out the Farmers’ Market across the street at the Native Sons Hall).

The first three sessions will uncover some of the mysteries behind Christmas.

  • November 29th- Old School Entertainment: Making Pioneer Toys
  • December 6th – Christmas Crafts: Decorations Then and Now
  • December 13th- Lighting Up the Past: Tin Can Lanterns

These are drop-in classes on a first come, first served basis. Cost is $2 per child or FREE with a Museum family membership. Maximum of 12 kids per class.

Fall Museum Discovery Days

The Courtenay and District Museum is now actively presenting Fall Museum Discovery Days for children 6-12 while schools are closed. Attendance has been great and students and parents are providing good feedback. Discovery Days include learning about the cultural and natural history of the Comox Valley through activities. The classes are popular, so please book in advance.

Instructor and guide: Pat Trask

Topic: Learn about the cultural, pioneer and natural history of the Comox Valley through activities and tours.

Activities: Crafts, fossil casting, dinosaur movies, a behind the scenes look at collection areas and interactive games.

Daily: Monday to Friday 9am – 3pm

Fee: $30.00 per day

Spaces: Up to 15 spaces – on a first-come, first-serve basis

Ages: 6 to 12

Food: Children need to bring a snack for the morning and afternoon plus lunch

Start date: Immediately

Fall Museum Discovery Days are on a drop-in basis. Payment for each day will be taken the morning of the camp. Doors open at 8:45am and camp will finish at 3pm sharp. To guarantee your placement, pre-registration and payment is required.

The museum is offering a variety of programmes for kids and adults this season. Read on to find out how you can be involved in the fun!

Dinosaur Story Time at the Museum – begins July 7th

Starting July 7 and re-occurring every Monday throughout the summer at 1pm, children of any age are invited to come and listen to a dinosaur story at the museum. Story Time is a free drop-in activity. (Note: the museum will be closed on Monday, August 4th).

Learn to Dye Wool – begins June 20th

Children will learn to dye wool using everyday kitchen supplies and the heat of the sun! Spices, flowers, fruits and vegetables make wonderful natural dyes.

Learn to Knit – begins June 27th

A knitted square has the potential to become so many things: a hat, a bag, a pair of fingerless mitts … it’s up to your child’s imagination.

Learn to Finger Knit – begins July 11th

Finger knitting is a great way to introduce children to the fibre arts and a wonderful way to learn the basics of knitting. Your child will start and finish a finger knit project in class.

“Mystery in the Rocks” – begins July 8th

These children’s classes center around dinosaurs and fossils. Using museum specimens and hands-on, interactive activities, students will be given the unique opportunity to explore what life was like on Vancouver Island millions of years ago.

The Nature Lab & Studio – begins July 8th

Environmental Sustainability & Art Workshops for Children. Developed and presented by Jennifer Margetish, these workshops provide inspiration through a hands-on exploration of patterns, colours, textures and forms found in nature that can be used in creating art.

Kids Summer Discovery Camp Series

Ever wonder what rocks would say if
they could talk? At the Courtenay
museum this summer we will be
uncovering some of the stories from
fossils found in the Comox Valley. We
will unearth the mystery of the Cretaceous
Period and then jump foreword
in time to explore the different ways
dinosaurs and marine animals moved
and ate. Come and join us at the Courtenay
Museum as we explore the past
through fun, hands-on activities that
excite the mind and inspire curiosity.

Kids Discover! Summer Kids Camp

The CDM’s Summer Day Camps for kids delve into discoveries through fun and educational activities, behind the scenes exploration and exciting field trips.

During each three day camp, kids can learn all about how the Earth works, ancient prehistoric life forms and fossils and natural resources.
