Archives Awareness Week
Did you know that the third week of November marks BC Archives Awareness Week? In observance of the week, the Courtenay Museum would like to bring attention to a resource recently added to the archives.
Moonlight & Magic
The museum will be open from 5:00pm to 8:30pm for Courtenay’s 2023 Moonlight and Magic event on Friday, November 17th. Walk the streets of Courtenay and enjoy events, music, food, and shops open later than usual. Admission to the museum will be by donation while our hours extend into the evening for the public.
Last Chance – BC’s Marvellous Mushrooms Exhibit
The Royal BC Museum’s wildly popular travelling exhibit, BC’s Marvellous Mushrooms, will be moving on to its next location in December. Its last day here will be Saturday, December 9th, so be sure to come by to learn about our fascinating fungi before it’s gone.
Remembrance Day Exhibit
In commemoration of the family, friends, and loved ones lost in the line of duty, the museum will have a temporary Remembrance Day exhibit in the second floor gallery until November 10th. The museum will be closed on Saturday, November 11th.
Elasmosaur Named B.C.’s Official Fossil
Eighty million thanks from the Courtenay and District Museum to the Heritage Branch and the British Columbia Palaeontological Alliance for this public voting process and to all those who voted for the Puntledge River elasmosaur discovered by Mike Trask in 1988 to become a provincial symbol.
Keeping Up the Facade
You may have noticed that the museum’s front entrance is getting a facelift! Ravenstone Masonry & Conservation Inc.’s Shawn Thibault has been working on the much-needed restoration of the sandstone features from the original historic post office building.

Halloween Candy Jar Contest
Get a head start on your candy haul on Tuesday, October 31st with the museum’s candy jar guessing game. If your estimate is the closest to the actual number, you’ll win the entire jar of candy!
Fall 2023 Fossil Tours
Make the most of the fall season and book your spot on a world famous fossil tour guided by our Natural History Curator, Pat Trask. Our tours will continue throughout the fall, with school programming available for classes and youth groups. New Exhibit: BC’s Marvellous Mushrooms
A new travelling exhibition, BC’s Marvellous Mushrooms, created by the Royal BC Museum, explores the science and practical uses of mushrooms today, highlighting some of the most fascinating of the 3,400 known species in the province. The fungi exhibit will be on display in the museum’s second floor gallery from September 8th until December 9th, 2023.
